more copies of Outre on CD Baby

CD Baby has been out of stock of Outre for a bit.

They kept sending me e-mails asking for what I thought was a riDONKulous amount of CDs.

But I finally caved in and sent them what they wanted.

So - in case you've been waiting - there should be MORE than enough copies up there for a very long time.

Turn It UP!!

By way of self-proclaimed Lo-Fi Pop Super Star Scott Andrews - comes this short YouTube video demonstrating how music is having the life squashed out of it in the mastering process.

The process used for my Solo CD "Outre" - (available July 9th) was very old school. Record to tape, mix to tape, master from tape to CD. I specifically told the mastering engineer NOT to make "loudness" a priority at all.

Joe Gastwirt - the mastering engineer on OUTRE would have talked me out of trying to make it a loud record with this type of music - what he calls - "an awt rechud" (imagine a pleasant NY jewish accent) .

In fact - there's very little compression used in mastering on Outre at all.

This was freaky for me - I admit.

Solo CD Cvr Art, track listing, release date & more

Got word yesterday that my master has been approved for duplication and that duplication has begun!

I've been given a delivery date of 7/9/07

Here's the cover

and the track listing

1. From Under The Weight of Knowing
2. Fury
3. Satori
4. Path Beyond Tracing
5. Numb
6. Until You Don’t (live)
7. Trypto
8. Sui Generis
9. Mudita
10. Seeing is Freeing (live)
11. Still Silhouette

I'll begin the podcast/audio liner notes thing next week. Each episode will cover 2 tracks - I'll probably just do them in the order of the CD.

I'll have them up on CD baby eventually and ordering info will follow in the next few weeks.

In other news - I have a solo bass show tomorrow night in the North Beach District of San Francisco at a place called Grant & Green - it's at 1371 Grant Ave. SF, CA 94133

Solo Bassist Randy Marshall will open the show at 7pm, followed by a solo bass set from Ariane Capp, Andy Cervantes, the bass & drum group Toast Machine and finally a set from me.

No cover. The whole thing should start at around 7pm & wrap up by 9:15pm or so.

Stop by and have some drinks!

Solo CD Update

The latest from solo cd world - Mastering is happening today.

I should get a final artwork/print sample for approval early next week. If everything is cool the replication peeps tell me I can expect delivery of final product around the 29th of June.

I'll use the podcast to deliver each of the tracks - like 1 or 2 per week - with a bit of commentary as well. If all goes as planned that should start next week. More details in the days ahead.

CD progress

Last thursday I had percussion tracked on 2 tunes by an amazing bay area percussionist - Ian Dogole.

I learned about Ian from fellow bassist Edo Castro.

studideo update

ok - so my "studio blogging" idea never really panned out.

My bad. Bottom line is that I'm lazy. Well ok - not lazy - busy. When I finish my work day - like about now - I want to work on the project till I get really sleepy. Then, I go to sleep. Then I wake up and do it again. See - no time for blogging. I do have a short video I took with my digital camera - I just haven't had time to up load it to my server. I'll do it tonight - or maybe this weekend.

So here's a quicky update as to where things stand.

13 tunes are down on reel. Percussion is being cut tomorrow on 2 tunes. Technically - that should be the end of tracking. BUT . . . .

The project might be a bit top heavy in the up-tempo slappity tappity wickedy wackity dept. Or as our engineer Patrick O'Connor calls it - "electric spiders'. Just roll with it. ,-)

So in order to have a few more options when it comes to compiling the final release - I hope to cut 2 additional tunes with a slower more spacious vibe.

That'll give me 15 tracks to mix (which should take place mid to late next week) and then sit with them for a week or so before choosing the finals for the CD.

Mastering is penciled in for May 10th. I should have final duped product by the end of May - first week in June.

Then I can start work on my next project.

Studio Report - Day 1

Saturday was my first day in the studio - sorry no pics yet.

Overall the day was largely spent on various set-ups and levels and sounds and tone and experimenting etc. I played a few tunes but probably won't keep keep those takes.

I was pretty challenged by the experience..

Solo CD

Yes - I'm actually going to make one.

;-)

Recently I've been feeling pretty ready to let these songs go. It's a difficult feeling to explain. I just get the sense that they are ready, that I'm ready.

Fuck you MOTU

The 828 running on my G4 powerbook has frozen on me mid-take 5 times in the last 2 days. It's history for this project.

So I'm back to using my sweet, sweet rock solid, has never failed me ProTools Mix++ system. And it feels great!
